"Back When Bob Ritchie Was Still "Yodeling In The Valley" (circa 1990)
Get home around 2:30am, I can't wait to open the keys to my door and download the new album. I don't get off of work until 12:30am, but, helped out a friend of mine's dad (you know who you are).
Download goes quick.
Chief recommended one listen with headphones, so I grab the PX100's and plug em into the laptop. The piano introduces it's listener to the first track "This Cloud". It goes like a little something like this... a series of coughs, some Chief laughs, more piano, shout out to Chanes , a flick of a lighter and an inhale. These are the events that introduce us again to the artist who brought you...
The second cut.. "Broken" man loves broken woman. Examine.
"Having someone on my levels been hard to find,
we don't take no shit so we argue at times,
our relationships always been hard to define".
Man loves woman for what she offers, Woman loves man for what he offers. It ends with a fitting True Romance sample.
Song number 3 leads it's journeyman into a soulful opener with Kiko (Bing and Google searches leave me with nothing on her) "Lesson In Love".
"She seen the charm in me, it was all like a commercial from e-harmony".
It ends with needing voice mail.
Gotta Stop Runnin' features Phathom (who has a nice flow)
"Praying at night that the Lord will save us from our demons".
Recognize. BOOM! Who is that guy on the hook, he's good!?
For track number five...I am going to leave it to Beware, because, he summed it up best, Word.
"If all ya wanna do is dance please remove this disc."
#6 is "In Times Things Change" - Joey Fava is a featured guitarist here, (Robots In The Garden) opens on acoustic and generates nice hooks. This song is hybrid and sick as fuck. Different, guitar adds a welcomed layer.
The disc reaches it's pinnacle meaning with the bars below.
"Soul of a dreamer with a hustler's heart,
you know I finish up something I start,
hate it or love it, it's art
and that's what set it's apart
i'm just hoping that the message is caught
and not lost, it's thought"
Thank you Chanes for the Mary J. sample to finish off my second favorite song on this album.
S.O.D.C - Chiefs ode to Detroit.
"It's Detroit where the grass aint the greenest,
but i'm from it and i love it so i miss it when i leave it"
Listen in for a mean ol' WXYZ newcaster sample towards the end. (Don't let me catch you slipping did you catch the first one after "Days I Remember"?)
My favorite and the stealer on this album "Vinnie Johnson" is produced by Apollo Brown (http://twitter.com/ApolloBrown) check out "Skilled Trade" which can be found on the nets Make Do and Track # 3 .
"PS, Hex said "go fuck ya life" .Die-troit. Die-troit. Die-troit."
