Mittn Music: ahh, Marshall Mathers LP, 2000. good times
Red Pill: I'm still a pretty young dude, you gotta remember. I was like 11 when that dropped.
Mittn Music: rofl @ Space Jam, shit, i probably got some honest purchases that would make you laugh too
Red Pill: right
Red Pill: haha, yeah. I could prolly think of some way more embarassing shit than that too unfortunately
Mittn Music: I think the first rap cassette I bought when I was 11 was like It's On (Dr. Dre) 187um Killa
Red Pill: right dope. even though I think I was prolly 4 or 5 when that shit came out haha
Mittn Music: i'll also give you some credit, I didn't know who Dilla was until I was done with college. You made a good point when you said "1,000,000" hits on myspace but don't know who Dilla is". You hit the nail on the head, I was talking with a co-worker about that same stuff the other day. You ask somebody from Detroit or even LA who their favorite rapper is and you get "Lil Wayne, Eminem, Jay Z and Gucci"..those cats don't pay attention to his legacy (J Dilla)
Red Pill: Right and that's the thing, I'm not gonna try and say I was down with Dilla from day one, that'd be a lie. I got put onto him, actually by b.damon prolly like 5 or 6 years ago. Then, you start listening to his beat tapes, to Slum, you start listening to Tribe, Busta, shit, and you're like "That was Dilla?!". It's crazy. I just can't imagine what he'd be doing today.
Mittn Music: I agree. All the big beatmakers of the early 2000's were throwing him props and fans were always like "who"? Dilla was never about that fame, he was good enough with humble.
Red Pill: Exactly, and that's just another part of his legacy. Being a good dude, looking out for Detroit and just wanting to make dope music. It's too bad, and it seems like this with a lot of artists.. that people are really into now that he's gone. But, sometimes that's how it goes.
Mittn Music: yeah. he definitely opened up the railroad from Detroit to LA too.
Red Pill: Yeah, I was actually just watching Stussy doc on him today.
Mittn Music: so if you could work with anyone in the D, who would it be?
Red Pill: Hmmm.. Man. There's so much talent coming out of Detroit right now. I mean, if we're talking strictly Detroit rappers, I'd love to get on some shit with Finale. He had hands down one of the best albums of the year
And also, Miz Korona's new shit is crazy too. I'd definitely like to work with her at some point.
Mittn Music: two good picks. You looking forward to The Hybrid? Danny Brown's new album.
Red Pill: Oh yeah, definitely. Danny Brown's got some shit for sure. A lot of people hate on him, but I think he's funny as hell. And he's pretty dope.
Mittn Music: So living in E. Lansing, it's probably tough to get back to this side of town often for events at times, i bet.
Red Pill: Definitely man. It sucks. But, I love the Lansing area. It's where I've gotten myself established in the Michigan Hip Hop scene and I owe the area and the people here everything. As far as I'm concerned, no matter where I end up, without Lansing I wouldn't be doing any of the shit I'm doing right now.
Mittn Music: You have the right attitude. I could name you a boatload of rappers/artists who have forgotten where they came from.
Red Pill: Yeah, I mean. I love Detroit. I grew up in Redford, delivered on a food distribution truck all over Detroit since I was 12, so I know the city and love the city. But, I put my first legitimate album out in Lansing. Got on 2dopeboyz in Lansing. Had my first headlining show in Lansing.
Mittn Music: I was noticing some twitter updates from Ketchum during your shows and that's when I started pay attention.
Red Pill: Yeah, haha. That was my album release party. And yeah, on some behind the scenes shit, Will Ketchum has been a good friend and made some moves for me. So, once again, without Lansing, I would've never met Will and some future shit would not be happening.
Mittn Music: You going to either of the two shows we got going on Saturday night?
Red Pill: Unfortunately not man, I'm gonna be pretty wrapped up in this video shoot. But, make sure you check out J Young at the Shelter for the WHUTUPDOE release. He's part of the crew I've been working with in Lansing. Really dope emcee.
Mittn Music: i will get on J's music. Going to the Chief show, closer to work once I am off
Red Pill: Yeah no doubt.
Mittn Music: you mentioned something about delivery through food distribution. is that partly where the album title comes from? i like the title, almost a double meaning.
Red Pill: Nah, actually that was working with my dad on a delivery truck. The album's referring to myself now, because I deliver for Quiznos in East Lansing. It sucks haha.
Mittn Music: i knew you worked there, i didn't know they had delivery. Damn, only in college towns. I liked what you said the other day about people coming in asking for $5 footlongs, like the GTFO
Red Pill: haha, one thing you learn in the food service industry is how stupid/annoying people really are.
Mittn Music: you like Blu
Red Pill: yeah man. and actually, no I haven't had a chance to check that yet. I hear its pretty dope
Mittn Music: the new video is dope as hell too
Mittn Music: So what are you studying @ MSU?
Red Pill: Political Science. But, that's a plan b. I'm graduating next fall and I'm pushing this music shit like crazy once that's out of my way. It's been hard as fuck balancing being a full time student, 30hrs or more at Quiznos and doing the rapper stuff.
Mittn Music: i can imagine that. you wake up, you got to class all day, you work and then you get in the zone musically
Red Pill: Pretty much. Or play a show, or whatever. It gets hectic.
Mittn Music: One more for good measure, who put out your favorite album in 2009?
Red Pill: Diamond District
Mittn Music: DC Style
Red Pill: yeah, dope, dope album.
Mittn Music: i'm going to have to listen, you threw me a curve, never heard it.
Red Pill: Yeah, either that or yU (from Diamond District). His album, "Before Taxes" was nuts.
Mittn Music: right on. thanks man. i'll probably have this shit up in a few days.
Red Pill: dope sir, thanks again. it was a pleasure
Mittn Music:what time you got class tomorrow?
Red Pill: tomorrow i dont, i have work tho at 9
